Auction and Charity Fair

The following members gave great service to the Club as Auction conveners over the years. This is not an easy role, as it required organising a massive collection of goods from people around the district, sorting these goods, getting them into the Auction on the day, and getting rid of unsold goods in the final clean up. All this required the full co-operation of Club members, who would collect goods in their evenings, turn up on Saturday morning for sorting and pricing, and then a full turnout was required on the day. Over the last few years special mention should be made of the work of David Drake and Gordon Buckley, who never served as conveners, but collected almost every evening on the days before the Auction. And for stalwarts who worked on collecting and sorting every year, nothing can match the contribution of Gilbert Atkins and Mark Read, nor Doug Rees in the formative years.

This auction was referred to at the time as the "Sale of Redundant Goods" project, because most of the items offered came from retailers who gave goods they were having difficulty in moving off their shelves. A percentage of all sales had to be returned to them, which meant a huge amount of paperwork was necessary to keep track of each sale.

Rain threatened this Auction, and retailers agreed to a late shift stalls into the main street under the verandas- then the sun came out. After that the Club never had a wet auction.
